Tensions between Washington and Havana reached a boiling point this week after the Trump administration ordered the immediate expulsion of a high ranking Cuban diplomat. The move followed a chaotic confrontation on the floor of the United Nations General Assembly, where U.S. Ambassador Mike Waltz and Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla engaged in a loud shouting match during a debate over the long standing U.S. economic embargo against the island nation.
Ambassador Waltz revealed that Secretary of State Marco Rubio signed the necessary paperwork to eject the first secretary of the Cuban delegation, asserting that the official would be on a plane back to Havana within twenty four hours. According to Waltz, the decision came after the diplomat allegedly shoved and attempted to assault an American official. While a State Department spokesperson characterized the event as an example of intimidation tactics used by an incompetent communist regime, the Cuban Mission countered these claims in a letter to the UN Secretary General, arguing instead that their staff member’s personal space had been invaded for social media purposes.
The diplomatic rift coincides with a significant escalation in aggressive rhetoric from top U.S. officials regarding Cuba’s internal governance. Secretary Rubio recently took to social media to encourage those seeking change on the island to form discrete partnerships with the CIA, while President Trump suggested during a campaign rally in South Florida that his administration intends to resolve its issues with Cuba shortly after dealing with Iran.
Despite these mounting pressures and threats of intervention from Washington, international sentiment remains largely opposed to U.S. policy toward Havana. On Wednesday, the UN General Assembly overwhelmingly passed another resolution condemning the American embargo, with 130 countries voting in favor of ending the restrictions. As both nations trade accusations of aggression and interference, it appears unlikely that relations will stabilize anytime soon.
